A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

If all you're learning is the technology of improving your eating, sleeping, mating and defending, then you don't need a university degree

Book says many U.S. universities are waste of money

"All undergraduate education should be a liberal arts education where you think about the enduring ideas and issues of the human condition," Hacker said. "After that, go on to law school or study dentistry -- you have plenty of time."

Hacker said the high price of tuition often has little to do with teaching.

"Prices got to where they are because both universities and administrators spent like drunken sailors," Hacker said, noting Ivy League graduates often have average careers.anger.

Futility or Utility of an Education Hansadutta das

Modern university education prepares a person to conform to a particular mentality or mindset, mainly geared to the pursuit of a livelihood, which obliges him to go door to door, begging for some service for a few scraps of bread. Although a person may get a very highly sophisticated, technical education, unless someone employs him, his education is useless. more

Education means inquiry into the ultimate goal of life

excerpt from lecture on Srimad-Bhagavatam 5.5.5, Vrindaban, October 27, 1976

If one is inquisitive to know what is the ultimate goal of life, for him, a guru is required. But if he wants immediate some sense gratification, he doesn't require a guru. For sense gratification there is no need of guru. Even these birds and beasts, they know how to gratify senses. There is no need of university or teacher. Say for sex life, nobody requires to go to the university. They know. Ahara-nidra-bhaya-maithunam cha [eat, sleep, mate, defend] – these four things, there is no need of university education.

But at the present moment to go to university means how to gratify the senses very scientifically. Scientifically. How to steal scientifically. Does it require any scientific knowledge how to cut throat and how to steal? No. They require education for spiritual understanding, tad-vijñanartham, not this vijñanartham, this material knowledge. It doesn't require. It is simply a waste of time. This modern university education is simply a waste of time.

There was no education for even the vaishyas. There are four divisions: brahmana, kshatriya, vaishya, shudra. [1] But vaishya and shudra, there is no need of education. The brahmanas, because they will guide the society, they require education. And the kshatriya, they will give protection to the society; therefore there was education guided by the brahmana. And for the vaishyas, krishi-gorakshya-vanijyam vaishya-karma... [Bg 18.44]. Where is the education? He can see, learn from his father how the field is to be cultivated with a plow. He doesn't require. He can see. And fifty years ago we have seen that those who were in the lower status of life, they never sent their children to school. I have seen it. Never sent. "Oh, what is the use of wasting time? Better admit him in some working shop or in some business." The Marwaris still do that: "Please keep my son in your firm." And small children, by seeing Just like our children, they are seeing this deity worship, this kirtan – they will learn. Similarly, those who have to work to earn their livelihood, mechanical or some, they can go to vocational training. What is the use of wasting time going to the university? Scientific education for hammering? Hammering you can see. You take a hammer and go on. [laughs] What is the use for university degree? Technical nonsense, they have invented technical... Does it require any education? No.

Tad-vijñanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet: [Mundaka Upanishad 1.2.12] education is required if you require to understand the value of life, tattva-jijñasah. Tattva-jijñasu shreya uttamam: [inquisitive to know what is the ultimate benefit of this life].

1. - Human society, according to the Vedas, is comprised of four natural divisions according to occupation: 1) The brahmanas represent the head of society, comprised of learned sages, seers, teachers, counselors and ministers, and their duty is to give overall spiritual direction to society; 2) The kshatriyas represent the arms and shoulders of society, comprised of kings, military men, state administrators, police, and their duty is to give protection to the citizens under the guidance of the brahmanas; 3) The vaishyas represent the belly of society; it is they who provide sustenance and generate prosperity for all. They are the agriculturists, the traders and financiers; and 4) The shudras represent the legs of society; comprised of hired and self-employed workers, skilled craftsmen, technicians, engineers, artists, all those persons who carry the load of society, lending assistance to the brahmanas, kshatriays and vaishyas.
