A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

No earthly cow can match the Surabhi or Kamadhenu, but their descendants are invaluable to human society.

Missy the million dollar Holstein

Even amid a downturn in the dairy cow market, three-year-old sells for $1.2-million, proof that elite animals can still fetch top dollar.

Missy is the Miss Canada and Miss America of Holsteins. She produces 50 per cent more milk than your average cow, a whopping 50 kilograms a day.

Missy's owners have already pre-sold 25 embryos for $230,000. They expect her to produce 150 embryos, and were encouraged when, on their first attempt six weeks ago, they managed to harvest 19. Missy also has six bull contracts worth $500,000. If she can produce six male offspring who become sought-after sires, her owners can earn up to $500,000 from each in royalty payments from semen sales.

Protecting cows
Making cows happy is good for the planet A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

So if you keep the cows happy, then cow will supply large quantity of milk. If the cow knows that you are going to kill it, she is always afraid, always fearful: "Oh, this man will kill." They can understand. I have seen in New Vrindaban. One cow, she was crying because her calf was taken away. So she was feeling so sorry. Now in our New Vrindaban, we see how the cows are happy, how they are dealing. They are not afraid. This is our duty, to keep the cows happy. Just like I want to see my wife and children happy, similarly, it is the duty of the human society to see that the cows feeling very happy. This is human civilization. Otherwise it is tiger civilization, meat-eaters. Meat is not eaten by human being. It is eaten by the dogs, by the tigers, by the animals. more

Descendants of Surabhi

purport, Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.17.9

Protection of bulls and cows and all other animals can be possible only when there is a state ruled by an executive head like Maharaja Parikshit. Maharaja Parikshit addresses the cow as mother, for he is a cultured, twice-born, kshatriya king. Surabhi is the name of the cows which exist in the spiritual planets and are especially reared by Lord Sri Krishna Himself. As men are made after the form and features of the Supreme Lord, so also the cows are made after the form and features of the surabhi cows in the spiritual kingdom. In the material world the human society gives all protection to the human being, but there is no law to protect the descendants of surabhi, who can give all protection to men by supplying the miracle food, milk. But Maharaja Parikshit and the Pandavas were fully conscious of the importance of the cow and bull, and they were prepared to punish the cow-killer with all chastisement, including death. There has sometimes been agitation for the protection of the cow, but for want of pious executive heads and suitable laws, the cow and the bull are not given protection. The human society should recognize the importance of the cow and the bull and thus give all protection to these important animals, following in the footsteps of Maharaja Parikshit. For protecting the cows and brahminical culture, the Lord, who is very kind to the cow and the brahmanas (go-brahmana-hitaya), will be pleased with us and will bestow upon us real peace.

Krishna, the Supreme Personality as Govinda, cowherd boy

excerpt from Chaitanya-charitamrita Madhya-lila 20.152-154, New York, Dec 5, 1966
Govinda

Govinda means... Go means three things. What is that? Go means the senses, and go means cow, and go means land. There are three meanings of go. So He gives pleasure to these three things. Wherever He is present, it becomes blissful, ananda. anandamayo 'bhyasat (Vedanta-sutra 1.1.12). The Vedanta-sutra says, anandamaya, always full of... Krishna, the reservoir of pleasure. So whenever He is present, in whichever land, in whichever country, in whichever planet He is present, it becomes full of bliss, ananda. Govinda. And He is playing just like cowherd boy, sixteen-year-boy and playing with cows. His father has got many cows, and He goes to the cows, pleasure trip with friends. That is Krishna's business. He is not going to any office or any factory. You see? So goshtha. He goes, and His mother gives Him sufficient to eat. And after eating breakfast, with His friends and His flute and cows He goes outside for pleasure trip. That is Krishna's business. Therefore He is Govinda. The cows, oh, as soon as they see Krishna, they become... They lick up His face and body, and every cow has got a different name. As soon as He will call, the cow will come immediately and dropping milk. And those cows are also spiritual. Surabhi. It is described in the Brahma-samhita. Surabhir abhipalayantam [Bs. 5.29]. Surabhi cow means nonexhaustive. You can milk as much milk you want and as many times. In the material world the cow is limited. There is time that you can milk, morning and evening, and so much quantity, not more than that. But surabhir means you can milk those cows anytime you like and you can draw milk as many as you like, as much as you like. This is called surabhi. In the description of Brahma-samhita: chintamani-prakara-sadmasu kalpa-vriksha-lakshavriteshu surabhir abhipalayantam [Bs. 5.29]. Surabhir abhipalayantam. So therefore He is Govinda. He gives... He is pleasure for everyone.

And indriya... Go means senses. We are seeking sense pleasure. Sense pleasure means reciprocation between the two. I want to see a beautiful girl. That means two. Or I want to see a beautiful boy. So that means two. So without two, there cannot be sense pleasure. I want to eat something palatable. There must be two. At least, the dish must be full of varieties. So impersonal, there is no pleasure, actual pleasure. So Krishna, our relationship with Krishna, our service with Krishna, that is pleasure. Govinda. That is real sense pleasure. By seeing Krishna, by tasting Krishna, by smelling Krishna, by touching Krishna—everything, that is sense pleasure. That is our real sense pleasure. So He is Govinda and sarva-karana-karanam [Bs. 5.1], the cause of all causes. Beyond Him, there is no other cause. This is the description Lord Chaitanya gives.
