The Politico July 9, 2007
- CARRIE BUDOFF
An atheistic person cannot be firm in his word of honor. One who cannot control the senses cannot be steady in his determination. The great politician Chanakya Pandit said, "Never put your trust in a diplomat [politician] or in a woman." Those who are addicted to unrestricted sense gratification can never be truthful, nor can they be trusted with any faith.
Jagai-Madhai in those days were taken as very, very sinful, although they were born of brahmana family. But by bad association, they became thieves, rogues, gunda [gangsters] and drunkards, meat-eaters, woman-hunters. These are all good qualification now, very good qualification. If one is woman-hunter and drunkard and meat-eater, oh, his social position is very nice, up-to-date. Up-to-date. This is modern civilization. But formerly, especially a gentleman-gentleman means born of high caste: brahmana, kshatriya, vaishyaÑif they would be woman-hunter, drunkards, meat-eaters, immediately they'll be rejected from the position. Immediately. That was Hindu society. No gentleman could... Still now, in some provinces, the high caste men, brahmana, kshatriyas, they'll never take, touch these things. This is sinful. So Jagai-Madhai, they were zamindars, very rich men, and brahmana. But because they were addicted to these habits, they were taken as the most sinful. But Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananda Prabhu delivered them: papi-tapi jata chilo, hari-name uddharilo.
So the same principle is being followed at the present moment. And by the grace of Krishna and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the result is also same, because Jagai-Madhai was delivered by Them. By the same Hare Krishna maha-mantra, thousands of Jagai-Madhai are coming to be purified. The process is the same. This is called parampara [disciplic succession] system. If we follow the parampara system strictly, then the effect will be the same. As it was five thousand years ago, five hundred years ago, the same effect will be now also.
SHRUTAKIRTI: Some very interesting statistics this morning about drinkers in this country.
DHRISHTADYUMNA: My father, he's the president of this liquor company, and they study the charts to see who is drinking the most. And they have discovered that the biggest drinkers in the world are the politicians in Washington, D.C., that they drink more liquor than anyone.
PRABHUPADA: Yes. They have got so many anxieties. So many anxieties.
DHRISHTADYUMNA: And how can they manage nicely when they are always intoxicated?
HARI-SAURI: When we were running our political format in MelbourneÑone of the boys was going for some positioning in the stateÑhe was quoted in the newspapers. They picked it out as the quote of the week, because they asked him, they said, "What would be the first thing, if you are elected, you will do?" So he said, "I would abolish the bar in the House of Parliament." So they said, "Oh, why would you do that?" He said "How can you rule a country when you're intoxicated all the time?" So they picked it out and put it in the newspapers as the quote of the week.
PRABHUPADA: Who said?
HARI-SAURI: In Melbourne, in one of the papers.
PRABHUPADA: Our man said?
HARI-SAURI: Yes.
PRABHUPADA: Very good argument, that these drunkards, rascals, how you can rule over the country? You are always intoxicated.
DHRISHTADYUMNA: Actually, the general mass of American people, if they hear this, they will respect us very much. Just like we were staying in the campsites. The little children, they come to the aratis, then they go back to their campsite, and they told, "Oh mommy, daddy, come see this wonderful bus." So they bring their fathers to Bhagavad-gita class, and we were lecturing to the fathers of all these children. And afterwards they were all giving donations and taking Bhagavad-gitas. Because they are very much upset about the country, but they have no solution.
PRABHUPADA: No.
DHRISHTADYUMNA: And then we can give alternatives.
MADHAVANANDA: In a recent issue of Newsweek magazine, there was a very large article about Washington, D.C. politicians-congressmen and senators being exposed by the press for going out with prostitutes and taking money and misspending. Big expose, scandal.
