Scientists Concoct a $2-Trillion-Per-Year Plan To Geoengineer The Sahara Desert

Geoengineering, essentially terraforming on Earth, has been floated as a cure for global warming a number of times over the past year, but now some scientists have published a plan to transform a part of the Sahara desert into a lush forest, and in the process, absorb enough carbon to offset the world's current fossil fuel use. The catch: it will cost $2 trillion a year, and possibly destroy the Amazon jungle while unleashing giant swarms of locusts across Africa. go to story

Three-fourths of the planet
Who's in Charge of the Climate? A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

Despite our gross disobedience to the laws of God's nature, the Lord is kind enough to look after our maintenance. Water is one of the most important items for our maintenance, because without water we can neither produce food grains nor quench our thirst. Water is also required very liberally for many other purposes. Thus the Lord has preserved water on three fourths of the globe and has made it salty to preserve it. Salty water does not decompose, and that is the arrangement of providence. The Lord has engaged the powerful sun to evaporate the water of planets like earth and distill it into clear water in the clouds and then stock it on the peaks of mountains, as we stock water in overhead tanks for later distribution. part of the stock of water is refrigerated into ice, so that it will not flood the earth for no good purpose. The ice melts gradually throughout the year, flows down through the great rivers, and glides down to the sea again for preservation. more

Life Comes from Life

Now there is a scarcity of water in India, but what are the scientists doing about it? There is more than enough water in the world, so why don't the scientists bring water where it is urgently required? They should employ irrigation immediately. But instead they are going to the moon, the dusty planet, to make it fertile. Why don't they irrigate this planet? There's plenty of seawater, so why don't they irrigate the Sahara or the Arabian or Rajasthani Desert? "Yes," they say, "in the future. We are trying." In their pride, they immediately say, "Yes, yes. We are trying."

Water supply sufficient; obedience to God deficient

excerpt from lecture on Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.8.21, New York, April 13, 1973

You want water. Just see: there are oceans of water. You want purified water. You cannot. Although the ocean water's so much, when there is scarcity of water, you have take help of Krishna. He'll evaporate the water, He'll make it cloud. Then when it falls down, then it becomes sweet. Otherwise you cannot touch. Everything under control. Everything is full—water, light, heat. Everything is complete. Purnat purnam udachyate, purnasya purnam adaya purnam evavashishyate [Ishopanishad Invocation]. His stock is never finished. Simply you become obedient and the supply is there. You can understand.

It doesn't cost anything to chant the maha-mantra

excerpt from purport, Srimad-Bhagavatam 9.1.17

Those who are intelligent take advantage of the greatest yajña in this age by chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra in congregation. When the Hare Krishna mantra is chanted by many men together, the chanting is called sankirtan, and as a result of such a yajña there will be clouds in the sky (yajñad bhavati parjanyah [Bhagavad-gita 3.14]). In these days of drought, people can gain relief from scarcity of rain and food by the simple method of the Hare Krishna yajña. Indeed, this can relieve all of human society. At present there are droughts throughout Europe and America, and people are suffering, but if people take this Krishna consciousness movement seriously, if they stop their sinful activities and chant the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, all their problems will be solved without difficulty. In other processes of yajña there are difficulties because there are no learned scholars who can chant the mantras perfectly well, nor is it possible to secure the ingredients to perform the yajña. Because human society is poverty-stricken and men are devoid of Vedic knowledge and the power to chant the Vedic mantras, the Hare Krishna maha-mantra is the only shelter. People should be intelligent enough to chant it. Yajñaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi sumedhasah [Srimad-Bhagavatam 11.5.32]. Those whose brains are dull cannot understand this chanting, nor can they take to it.
