Spiritual Life Drying Up Mirrored in Nature

Many states seen facing water shortages

An epic drought in Georgia threatens the water supply for millions. Florida doesn't have nearly enough water for its expected population boom. The Great Lakes are shrinking. Upstate New York's reservoirs have dropped to record lows. And in the West, the Sierra Nevada snowpack is melting faster each year. Across America, the picture is critically clear — the nation's freshwater supplies can no longer quench its thirst.

...It's not just America's problem — it's global.

Australia is in the midst of a 30-year dry spell, and population growth in urban centers of sub-Saharan Africa is straining resources. Asia has 60 percent of the world's population, but only about 30 percent of its freshwater. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a United Nations network of scientists, said this year that by 2050 up to 2 billion people worldwide could be facing major water shortages.

Parched Earth
Who's in Charge of the Climate? A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

The Lord distributes His mercy in the form of rains on the scorched earth at times of dire necessity. He supplies rain when we are practically on the verge of death for want of water. God is merciful undoubtedly, but He bestows His mercy on us when we need it most. This is so because we forget God as soon as we obtain this mercy. We should therefore remember the mercy of God constantly if we want to avoid distress. We are eternally related with Him, despite the state of forgetfulness already described above. Bhagavad-gita confirms that the laws of nature are stringent because they are conducted by three different modes. But one who surrenders unto the Lord overcomes the stringency of nature easily. more

Chant Hare Krishna for relief from scarcity of rain and food

purport, Srimad-Bhagavatam 9.1.17

In this age, the performance of yajña has been forbidden because no one can properly chant the Vedic mantras. If Vedic mantras are chanted properly, the desire for which a sacrifice is performed must be successful. Therefore the Hare Krishna chant is called the maha-mantra, the great, exalted mantra above all other Vedic mantras, because simply chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra brings so many beneficial effects. As explained by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (Shikshashtaka 1):

cheto-darpana-marjanam bhava-maha-davagni-nirvapanam
shreyah-kairava-chandrika-vitaranam vidya-vadhu-jivanam
anandambudhi-vardhanam prati-padam purnamritasvadanam
sarvatma-snapanam param vijayate shri-krishna-sankirtanam
[Chaitanya-charitamrita Antya 20.12]

"Glory to the Sri Krishna sankirtana, which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years and extinguishes the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death. This sankirtana movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge. It increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it enables us to fully taste the nectar for which we are always anxious."

Therefore, the best performance of yajña given to us is the sankirtana-yajña. Yajñaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi sumedhasah (Srimad-Bhagavatam 11.5.32: "In the age of Kali, intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to worship the incarnation of Godhead who constantly sings the names of Krishna."]. Those who are intelligent take advantage of the greatest yajña in this age by chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra in congregation. When the Hare Krishna mantra is chanted by many men together, the chanting is called sankirtana, and as a result of such a yajña there will be clouds in the sky (yajñad bhavati parjanyah [Bhagavad-gita 3.14]). In these days of drought, people can gain relief from scarcity of rain and food by the simple method of the Hare Krishna yajña. Indeed, this can relieve all of human society. At present there are droughts throughout Europe and America, and people are suffering, but if people take this Krishna consciousness movement seriously, if they stop their sinful activities and chant the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, all their problems will be solved without difficulty. In other processes of yajña there are difficulties because there are no learned scholars who can chant the mantras perfectly well, nor is it possible to secure the ingredients to perform the yajña. Because human society is poverty-stricken and men are devoid of Vedic knowledge and the power to chant the Vedic mantras, the Hare Krishna maha-mantra is the only shelter. People should be intelligent enough to chant it. Yajñaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi sumedhasah [SB 11.5.32]. Those whose brains are dull cannot understand this chanting, nor can they take to it.

Take Krishna's mercy, and nature will not wreak havoc

excerpt from conversation with disciples, Mayapur, February 11, 1976

HRDAYANANDA: In my zone there are many countries that are always being hit by earthquakes, tidal waves, floods, repeatedly.

PRABHUPADA: Yes. So what is to be done?

HRDAYANANDA: We'll go afterwards and preach there.

PRABHUPADA: Eh?

HRDAYANANDA: We will go afterwards and preach there. There is another country right next to it...

PRABHUPADA: Tell them that if you take to Hare Krishna, then these things will not happen. Tell them.

HRDAYANANDA: Yes. In Caracas, where you visited, less then ten years ago there was a big earthquake and many big skyscrapers fell into the earth, completely disappeared.

PRABHUPADA: Oh?

HRDAYANANDA: The whole skyscraper just fell into the earth. That was in Caracas. They said that after that people became more pious. During the earthquake they were screaming to God, "Have mercy, have mercy."

PRABHUPADA: Yes.

HRDAYANANDA: Another country, Nicaragua, just a few years ago there was a big earthquake, and the capital city was entirely destroyed. It was all gone, the entire capital.

Material nature one of Krishna's agents

excerpt from lecture on Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.8.20, Mayapur, September 30, 1974

Krishna has got many, many agents. Srishti-sthiti-pralaya-sadhana-shaktir eka chayeva yasya bhuvanani bibharti durga [Brahma-samhita 5.44].

This Durga power is there. You have seen the picture of Durga. She has got ten hands and different types of weapons. Now the Durga-puja will be performed. You can see the Durga deity. So ten hands, the material nature. Ten hands means ten directions: north, south, east, west, and then the four corners, eight, and up and down. So ten directions. So this material nature, Durga, is controlling the whole universe, ten directions. ...But how she is working? Not independently. Srishti-sthiti-pralaya-sadhana-shaktir eka chayeva. She is working just like shadow. The original body and the shadow body, they are two different. But the shadow body moves if the original moves. So therefore this word is used, chayeva. This vast power, material nature... It is a very powerful. It can create; it can destroy. At any moment, if there is some earthquake, the whole sea water may come and cover the land portion, and within the sea you can see one island has come out. Everyone has got this experience. So srishti-sthiti-pralaya. One side, pralaya [destruction]; one side, creation. So this can be done by the material nature. But how she is working? She is working under the direction of somebody else. That is Govinda. And Govinda also says in the Bhagavad-gita, mayadhyakshena prakritih suyate sa-characharam: [Bg. 9.10] "She is working under My direction."

So far killing or destroying is concerned, that Durga power, Krishna's power, that is sufficient. That is sufficient. He doesn't require to come to kill the demons. She is engaged. You have seen that Durga is killing the demon, that asura. You have seen the Durga's picture? The asura is there and the lion is there, and she has taken a bunch of hair of the asura, and the trident is pushed on his chest, and the lion has captured him. So he is overpowered. So the asura is overpowered, but if the asura makes more attempt to save himself, then there are, only two hands are engaged of Durga to kill the asura, one catching his hair and one the trident. Only two hands are engaged. But if he shows more power, then there are eight hands more, reserved with different types of weapons. So you cannot overcome the ruling, or the control, of the material nature. That is not possible. Daivi hy esha gunamayi mama maya duratyaya [Bg. 7.14]. So asura, to kill the asuras, however powerful they may be... We have seen. There were so many asuras in this world. There were Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, there was Hiranyakashipu. So many. But they could not survive. It is not possible. They'll be finished.

So asuras, to kill them... To kill the dushkritam, these asuras, Krishna does not require to come. He comes only to give protection and pleasure to the devotees. That is his aim.
