We can't afford their mistakes
President Obama CNN Feb 3, 2009 - ANDERSON COOPER

Obama: "I made a mistake"

President Obama says he takes the blame for the circumstances that lead to Tom Daschle withdrawing.

Obama: "...I think that, look, ultimately, I campaigned on changing Washington and bottom-up politics. And I don't want to send a message to the American people that there are two sets of standards, one for powerful people, and one for ordinary folks who are working every day and paying their taxes."

Cooper: "Do you feel you've lost some of that moral high ground which you set for yourself on day one with the..."

Obama: "Well, you know, I think this was a mistake. I think I screwed up. And, you know, I take responsibility for it and we're going to make sure we fix it so it doesn't happen again."

To whom does your President answer?
Representatives of the People Hansadutta das

Much is made of the governments of all nations—be they democratic, socialist, or communist or whatever—of their elected or appointed officials being THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE PEOPLE.

My question is To whom are the officials representing the people? In other words, to which higher authority are the elected or appointed officials representing the interests of the common people? And why would they need representation?

The Vedic principle is that the KING, who is selected by the qualified brahmanas, is the representative of GOD, KRSNA. The KING lets the people know what Krsna wants. If they disobey, he punishes them as the representative of GOD, KRSNA. more

Perfection in following the perfect

excerpt from conversation with disciples, Los Angeles, December 12, 1973

PRABHUPADA: ...In your country, you have all elected Mr. Nixon as president, and again you are protesting. Why you are protesting? You have already elected him. What is the reason?

KARANDHARA: Well, he's a rascal.

PRABHUPADA: [laughs] That's all. This kind of election is rascal election. It has no meaning. Therefore the public must know whom to elect and how to elect. That should be our propaganda. Because nowadays it is democratic government, teach people how to select the real leader. Real leader means who does not commit mistake, who is not illusioned, who does not cheat and who has no imperfect senses, who has, or, other words, one who has got perfect senses. So if you say, "How it is possible for the conditioned soul?" "Yes, it is possible if you follow the perfect." Just like we are doing. We are following Krishna. He does not commit mistake, He is not illusioned, His senses are not imperfect, and He does not cheat. We are following. Therefore, although we are imperfect, because we are following the perfect, our proposition is perfect. A child may be illiterate, but when he's taught, "Write A like this," and he follows that, he becomes literate. This is the policy.

Infallible instructions for perfect government

excerpt from purport, Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.10.3

The modern elected executive head of a state is just like a puppet because he has no kingly power. Even if he is enlightened like Maharaja Yudhishthira, he cannot do anything out of his own good will due to his constitutional position. Therefore, there are so many states over the earth quarreling because of ideological differences or other selfish motives. But a king like Maharaja Yudhishthira had no ideology of his own. He had but to follow the instructions of the infallible Lord and the Lord's representative and the authorized agent, Bhishmadeva. It is instructed in the shastras that one should follow the great authority and the infallible Lord without any personal motive and manufactured ideology. Therefore, it was possible for Maharaja Yudhishthira to rule the whole world, including the seas, because the principles were infallible and universally applicable to everyone. The conception of one world state can only be fulfilled if we can follow the infallible authority. An imperfect human being cannot create an ideology acceptable to everyone. Only the perfect and the infallible can create a program which is applicable at every place and can be followed by all in the world. It is the person who rules, and not the impersonal government. If the person is perfect, the government is perfect. If the person is a fool, the government is a fool's paradise. That is the law of nature. There are so many stories of imperfect kings or executive heads. Therefore, the executive head must be a trained person like Maharaja Yudhishthira, and he must have the full autocratic power to rule over the world. The conception of a world state can take shape only under the regime of a perfect king like Maharaja Yudhishthira. The world was happy in those days because there were kings like Maharaja Yudhishthira to rule over the world.
