High living, poor thinking
Cockroach on the 24th Floor A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

Their policy is "High living and poor thinking." They live in skyscraper but don't care for where they are going to next life, as a cat and dog. Never mind. Now live in skyscraper. Poor thinking. High living, poor thinking [laughter]. No idea that "Now I am living in the skyscraper building on the twenty-fourth story, and next life I'm going to be cockroach here." They don't know that. He doesn't inquire, "Wherefrom the cockroaches coming?" He has got attachment for this twenty-fourth story, so, but he's working so that he'll become a cockroach. So Krishna has given chance, "All right. You live in the twenty-fourth story as cockroach." more

Next body may not be to your liking

excerpt from Krishna Consciousness the Topmost Yoga System, "Beyond the Laws of Nature"

I do not know what is my next life, but the next life will come. Before us there are many species of life; I can take birth in any one of them. I can become a demigod, I can become a cat, I can become a dog, I can become Brahma—there are so many forms of life. In the next life I shall have to accept one of these forms, even if I do not want to. Suppose someone asks, "In your next life would you like to take the form of a dog or a hog?" I would not like it. But the law of nature says that after giving up this body, when I am not existing in this body any more, I will have to accept another body according to my karma. That is in the hands of nature. It is arranged by superior supervision. You cannot order, "Give me the body of Brahma, give me the body of Indra or a king or something exalted." That is not in your hands or in my hands; that will be judged by the superior agency of God, Krishna, and you will be given a body. Therefore, it is our duty to prepare a body which will help us go back to Krishna. That is Krishna consciousness.

Human birth the crossroads to next life

excerpt from On the Way to Krishna, "The Roads of the Foolish and the Wise"

One is low on the human scale if he does not use this human form of life to understand Krishna. If a man does not use his life to reawaken the relationship he has with his real Father, he is to be considered fallen in the human scale. Animals simply eat, sleep, defend themselves, have sexual intercourse and die. They do not avail themselves of higher consciousness because that is not possible in the lower forms of life. If a human being follows the activities of the animals and does not avail himself of his ability to elevate his consciousness, he falls down the human scale and prepares for an animal body in his next life. By the grace of Krishna we are given a highly developed body and intelligence, but if we do not utilize them, why should He give them to us again? We must understand that this human body has developed after millions and millions of years of evolution and that in itself it is a chance to get out of the cycle of birth and death in which over eight millions species of life evolve. This chance is given by the grace of Krishna, and if we do not take it, are we not the lowest among men? One may be a degree holder—M.A., Ph.D., etc.—from some university, but the illusory energy takes away this mundane knowledge. He who is really intelligent will apply his intelligence to understand who he is, who God is, what material nature is, why he is suffering in material nature, and what is the remedy to this suffering.
