On Wednesday, 5 August or Thursday, 6 August, depending on your location, yet another eclipse will throw its shadow upon most of the Earth Planet (see Figure 7 below), this time a penumbral lunar eclipse. This is the 3rd and last of a set of triple eclipses occurring within the span of one month.
Vedic astrologer Pandit Aaadietya Pandey says, "In Vedas, it is clearly mentioned that the effect of Eclipse starts 12 hours before the actual occurrence of the event. This period of 12 hours is known as sootak." Patita Pavana das (aka Miles Davis), disciple of Srila Prabhupada, theorizes that in fact an eclipse influences events up to 45 days before and after.
In any case, during the time of an eclipse, it is advised to recite the all-auspicious holy names of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, especially the Hare Krishna maha-mantra: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.
Srila Prabhupada has explained, in Teachings of Lord Chaitanya:
In the Kali-santarana Upanishad it is stated:hare krishna hare krishna
krishna krishna hare hare
hare rama hare rama
rama rama hare hare
iti shodashakam namnam
kali-kalmasha-nashanam
natah parataropayah
sarva-vedeshu drishyate
"The sixteen words—Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare—are especially meant for counteracting the contaminations of Kali. To save oneself from the contamination of Kali, there is no alternative but the chanting of these sixteen words."
According to NASA's eclipse site, the penumbral lunar eclipse, which occurs just 15 days after the total solar eclipse of 22 July 2009, has a magnitude of only 0.402, so it will not be visible to the naked eye.
