Idle Offerings to Deity

A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

Money should be spent in the service of the Lord, propagating Krishna consciousness
Venkateshwar Balaji Times of India Oct 10, 2009 - KINGSHUK NAG, Times News Network

Business with Balaji

Rs 50,000 crore is a lot of money, even for a deity. But many say this is just a rough estimate of the offerings devotees have bestowed at Lord Venkateswara's feet. A high court order to Tirupati's administrators may, in just a few months, reveal the actual spread of wealth. There's already tension in the temple town as the countdown begins.

A mind-boggling 20 lakh pilgrims visit the temple each year, adding Rs 300 crore in offerings, most of it in hard cash, to its kitty. Then there are donations that come in the form of gold, 350 kg, and silver, 500 kg, annually. Often, people like Karnataka tourism minister Gali Janardhan Reddy gift the Lord stupendously expensive jewels like the 16-kg diamond-studded crown he gave Ventakeswara, as Balaji is also known, this June. It was priced at Rs 42 crore.

"The Lord is a great revenue churner," chuckled an official of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), the Andhra Pradesh government-sponsored body that administers the temple. "We make Rs 100 crore every year just out of marketing the hair that pilgrims tonsure in the name of Balaji. The total annual income of the temple trust is Rs 600 crore and the budget outlay for the year 2008-09 was Rs 1,925 crore. TTD has more than Rs 1,000 crore in fixed deposits in various banks," said the official.

We're not scared of money
When spending millions on propaganda is justified Hansadutta das

There is always the question of money. In ordinary political rallies, millions of dollars are spent for propaganda to elect an unknown man as leader. We are also making propaganda, but for the real leader—God, or Krishna. The Vedas say that God is the leader of all living entities. To make this fact known, we are prepared to collect unlimited amounts of money and spend it to glorify Krishna. In material life, an insignificant person tries to make himself God by artificial propaganda. But in spiritual life one accepts his position as infinitesimal in comparison to God; he accepts that he is an eternal servant of God and spends all his intelligence and energy—whether in the shape of money, strength or whatever—to praise God. more

Request to spend Balaji's money for spreading Krishna consciousness

excerpt from conversation with Seven Ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad, Aug 22, 1976

Therefore the whole process is yajñarthat karmana. Yajñarthat karmano 'nyatra loko 'yam karma-bandhanah [Bhagavad-gita 3.9]. Yajña means the Supreme Lord, Vishnu. Yajña means yajña-shishtashinah santo muchyante sarva-kilbishaih. After performing yajña, if we enjoy life, then there is no sinful reaction. Otherwise, bhuñjate te tv agham papa ye pachanty atma-karanat. [From Bg. 3.13: "The devotees of the Lord are released from all kinds of sins because they eat food which is offered first for sacrifice. Others, who prepare food for personal sense enjoyment, verily eat only sin."] So all directions are there in the shastra, and the essence of all Vedic literature is the Bhagavad-gita. So at the present moment, our, this Krishna consciousness movement is that it doesn't matter what kind of state it is, but it should follow the principle of yajña. Yajñarthe karmana. Otherwise, we shall be responsible... This is the principle. Yajñarthat karmano 'nyatra loko 'yam karma-bandhanah. [Bg. 3.9]: "Work done as a sacrifice for Vishnu has to be performed, otherwise work causes bondage in this material world. Therefore, O son of Kunti, perform your prescribed duties for His satisfaction, and in that way you will always remain free from bondage."] I have seen in Balaji temple, mostly cultivators, they come, stand whole day there just to offer something, yajñarthe, for the satisfaction of the Lord. It's a great culture. Yajñarthe karmano 'nyatra. So karma, ordinary fruitive activities should be carried on for yajñarthe, for the satisfaction of Balaji, or Krishna. Not otherwise. The same, what is gathered as contribution, it should be utilized for yajña. Because the money is given for yajña, not for other purposes. That is a fact. Of course, the money is there. The innocent villagers, they have given the money in good faith that Krishna or Balaji will accept it and their hard labor will be successful. Yajñarthe karmana. Now that money should be properly utilized for yajñarthe.

Actually, everything belongs to God, Balaji. Ishavasyam idam sarvam [Ishopanishad mantra 1]. We are claiming unnecessarily, "This is mine." That is called maya. Nothing belongs to us. Everything belongs to the Supreme Lord. But we have claimed the Lord's property as our own. That is misgiving. Therefore yajña is recommended. Return to the Supreme voluntarily. That is called yajña.

varnashramachara-vata
purushena parah puman
vishnur aradhyate pantha
nanyat tat-tosha-karanam

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Vishnu, is worshiped by the proper execution of prescribed duties in the system of varna and ashram. There is no other way to satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead. One must be situated in the institution of the four varnas and ashrams." [Vishnu Purana 3.8.9, cited in Chaitanya-charitamrita Madhya-lila 8.58]

The varnashram-dharmabrahmana, kshatriya, vaishya, this is plan just to teach the whole society how to perform yajña. Varnashram chara-vata. Therefore this is the beginning of human civilization. Varnashram. How to return back. Just like Bali Maharaja. Bali Maharaja achieved, obtained, throughout the universe all the property, and he again returned to Vamana [the dwarf-brahmana incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead]. That was his success of life. So this Krishna consciousness movement is an educational movement to teach people how one should voluntarily return the property of the Lord to the Lord. That is called yajña. Yajñarthat karmano 'nyatra loko 'yam karma-bandhanah [Bg. 3.9]. So people actually suffering. Not only... This material life means suffering....That is stated in the Bhagavad-gita:

ya idam paramam guhyam
mad-bhakteshv abhidhasyati
na cha tasman manushyeshu
kashcin me priya-krittamah

"Arjuna said: By my hearing the instructions You have kindly given me about these most confidential spiritual subjects, my illusion has now been dispelled." [Bg. 11.1]

This idam guhyam, this confidential knowledge of Bhagavad-gita, should be spread all over the world. People are suffering. And that is the mission of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. He advises that:

yare dekha, tare kaha 'Krishna'-upadesha
amara ajñaya guru haña tara' ei desha

"Instruct everyone to follow the orders of Lord shri Krishna as they are given in the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. In this way become a spiritual master and try to liberate everyone in this land." [Cc. Madhya 7.128]

So it will be glory of India if we preach the message of Krishna, Bhagavad-gita. They're accepting. And I wish that the Balaji's estate, Balaji's money, should be spent for spreading Krishna consciousness, not for any other purpose. That is my request.
