Day 2 GBC Meeting in Mayapur approves continued editing of Srila Prabhupada's books

Das devi dasi

No end in sight for changes to the books
The following news tidbit comes to you from reports of the on-going GBC meetings at the Mayapur Festival 2007, posted at www.mayapur.com.

Brahma Muhurta das is heading up BBTI's operations in Northern Europe.

Can devotees hope that the editing of Srila Prabhupada's books will be checked? Apparently not, from the looks of the report:

Revisions to Srila Prabhupada's Books Documented Das devi dasi

ISKCON stands by Jayadvaita Swami, expecting the devotees should be grateful that the editors are so intelligent that they can correct the spiritual master's mistakes, but the upshot is that whoever reads the revised books will have to wonder what Srila Prabhupada really did say. more
Editing the BBT books

Brahma Muhurta Prabhu made an informative presentation outlining the BBT's reasons for continuing to edit Srila Prabhupada's books. He explained that the BBT's goal is to ensure that the BBT books are as accurate as possible; that any errors made earlier in the editing process are corrected. He offered numerous examples of transcribers of Srila Prabhupada's tapes misunderstanding his pronunciation. Because of this, many grammatical or more substantive errors ended up in BBT publications. He made a case that the editing of the BBT books should not be frozen, and said that while many devotees are misinformed about the editing process, when the need for accuracy in Srila Prabhupada's books is understood, they appreciate the BBT's efforts.

Sorry to say that the editors are more liberal with "cut and paste" than Brahma Muhurta has allowed in this oh-so-lengthy one paragraph, which does not pretend to address or explain anything but only brushes the matter aside.

The revisions to Srila Prabhupada's books are extensively documented at krishna.org/ISKCON/BookChanges/, thanks to Madhudvisa Prabhu. One glaring change he has pointed out in the Chaitanya-charitamrita (Revisions to Srila Prabhupada's Books Documented). Here, the editing to the one paragraph (Cc Madhya 15.197, wherein Srila Prabhupada gives his assurance that even if one thinks that the Society is comprised of pseudo-devotees or even non-devotees, then one can keep direct company with the spiritual master) has changed the meaning altogether to the opposite. Although devotees question how such changes make the text more "accurate", undoubtedly Jayadvaita & Co were concerned that the text should not contradict current GBC dogma. So the revisions continue, and we can expect they must continue to keep up with the ever-evolving GBC policies.
